Kani Kuyo Hojo-e (Memorial Releasing of the Crabs)
Head monk reading sutras before the crab offering
Held every April 18th, the Kani Kuyo Hojo-e is a ritual event where the head priest reads sutras, then releases Japanese freshwater crabs into a water basin on the temple’s premises. Crab fishermen from all over the country come to the event to pray for a good crab harvest and good sales throughout the year.
